Update From NC

Mornin' Belove'ds

Lots going on here in NC, the best of all is rain, rain, more rain!  We're not out of the drought yet and it will be the deep sweltering days of july and August that will set the future, but things are, for now, very juicy.  This morning it's misty and damp with charcoal clouds on the west horizon and we are expecting nearly 3/4 inch of water today.  As soon as it begins to rain I'll go out, spend some time at my water shrine (Thank you Dianne!!) and wallow in gratitude to my Water Goddess Council.  I've made it a point to go out and be-in the rain with an intent to experience each rain as a blessing, a big wet juicy kiss!

I continue to feel really cautious about engaging my normal growing season frenzy.  My intuition tells me there are already plenty of green-bloods living here and I need to be focused on their well-being first.  So, while I sit here literally vibrating with the desire to go to the Farmer's Market and acquire a truck load of beauty, I also feel a bit root-bound.  My challenge will be to find and follow balance this season......

Last week-end Laurel and Kathy came to visit. We spent Friday night doing deep gossip-magic.  Saturday was revlonic magic at the nail salon and co-aspecting the Material Girl as she manifested in all our favorite shopping spots.  We ended the day in deep trance with sweet potatoe-spinach soup, sourdough brioche stuffed with feta, wine, and chocolate in various forms (from Ganache!!).  We parted on Sunday after a long lounging morning discussing witch camps, themes and a re-hash of the continued fear and loathing going on at Spiral Heart.  All good stuff!!!

We got word on Sunday evening that Greg's Uncle Lewis had died.  Lewis Hubbard was an archtype of the great-amerikan-dream.  He came from a huge southern family whose roots were deep in the share-cropper culture.  With nothing but his ambition and belief that he could do anything, he started a real estate business in the mid 1920's.  He died a multi-millionaire having bought and sold nearly 1/2 of the properties in Forsythe and the surrounding counties.  Lewis appeared to have lived a really charmed life. He followed his dream, he held fast to his integrity, used a share of his fortune to help other folks follow thier dreams.  He died quietly and painlessly in his sleep.  While I'm sure Lewis had his share of disappointment, sadness and fear in life, he will be remembered and celebrated by his clan and his community with love and respect.

As part of my continuing seperation from corporate life,  Greg and I have opened a small business.  I will continue for awhile as a consultant to various companies in the airplane industry, but by Memorial Day I'll be completely on my own to work when and where I choose.  Besides the airplane stuff, there are a couple other things bubbling in my cauldron and I'm really looking forward to fashioning a self-directed life-style.  I find myself in the delightful position of having to choose my next activity from a "just-cauz-I-wanna" list!

Next week-end I look forward to spending time with LittleGreg at a local witchy gathering called Spirit-Quest.   This gathering is about as eclectic as it gets bringing together folks from most of the witch-magical-esoteric traditions in this part of the world.  Over the years the organization and presentation of this event has moved from group to group so the flavor is different each year.  I've not been to this gathering for many years, so it will be fun to meet new and reconnect with old acquaintances.

So...what up with all of you?

Sagalovesyou!

I wonder if we could do a pilgrimage to these as a family event?

clock April 1, 2008 06:43 by author Mark

I know you probably recieved the post I sent out with these in, but I just had to make sure that y'all got to see them.

Every year the Darwin awards re-news my faith for humanity....in a we-will-control-our-unchecked-population growth-as-a-species-through-sheer-stupidity-sort-of-way.

Brightest blessings

The Darwin Awards for 2008 have been announced.  Here are the winers among those helping to improve the gene pool.

Eighth Place

Detroit : a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve is car keys.

Seventh Place

A 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who 'totally zoned-out when he ran,' accidentally jogged off a 100-foot high cliff on his daily run.

Sixth Place

While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8 foot hole for protection from the wind and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom when it collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach used their hands and shovels trying to ge t him out but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him.

Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Fifth Place

Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor.

Fourth Place

Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger.

Third Place

After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon se eing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol. The officer and a clerk
promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No on e else was hurt.

HONOUABLE MENTION

Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored just driving around at 2 a.m. so they lit a quarter stick of dynamite to toss out the window to see what would happen. Apparently they failed to notice the window was closed.

RUNNER UP

Kerry Bingham had been drinking with several friends when one of them said that they knew a person who had bungee-jumped from a local bridge in the middle of traf fic. The conversation grew more heated and at least 10 men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4:30 AM. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge they discovered that no one had brought a bungee rope.  Bingham, who had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that a coil of lineman's cable lay nearby. They secured one end around Bingham's leg and then tied the other to the bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the c able tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. Bingham's foot was never located!

AND THE WINNER IS...

Zoo keeper Friedrich Riesfeldt ( Paderborn , Germany ) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded.  The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr. Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him.  It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves that 'Shit happens!'

IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPORTANT TO THANK THESE PEOPLE FOR REMOVING THEMSELVES FROM THE GENE POOL!

Sorry I'm late. Whats' for dinner?

clock March 21, 2008 07:41 by author Mark

Ello luvs'

Sorry I am late.  I am not quite sure where the time went...

The end of winter and the first day of spring was incredibly busy for me.  I worked on the U of M project for a couple of hours in the morning (I got caught up on e-mail YEAAAAAA!!!!) and then hit the ground running.   First stop Adler Graduate School.

I met with the Dean of Student Services to discuss a couple of issues I have had with my school experience thus far.  I just finished my fourth class and have only received 1 Grade.  This has been nerve wracking.  Since I do not have an academic background in psych I have been a provisional student.  Translated:  If I receive anything less than a 3.5, I can be removed from Adler. Period. No questions asked.  She let me know that currently I have a 4.0 in two classes (all I needed to get moved from provisional to a 'full' member of the student body).  She would look into why I am not getting my grades and what happened to my letter of 'full' acceptance. We then moved onto "how to write a syllabus".  Yes, my control issues are showing.   4 out of 4 classes have had Professors changing deadlines and assignments in the middle of class, after the syllabus has been given out.  Many of us schedule our lives around that syllabus, sometimes months in advance if it is posted early.  We then moved onto one particular Prof. who did not use any of the texts ($150 which I would not have spent on those books) for the class but opted to lecture out of HIS new book instead.  Did I mention that Psych is currently HEAVILY regulated by the state?  There are 3 review boards in place depending on your licensure.   You cannot change a syllabus or text list, after it has been reviewed by the licensing review board.  I got a big “mia culpa” from the executive staff and they assured me all my issues were currently under investigation.

I had a couple of stops to make for my other part time job.  As of yesterday, I work 10-16 hours a week as a part-time sales rep for a Pulse Electromagnetic frequency company.  Translate as a surgical bone stimulator that has been set to work on soft tissue instead of bone.  I was supposed to work with a trainer yesterday but she got called out of town due to a death in her family.  So I figured, what the hey, I’ll wing it.  And I did just fine….wound care is wound care.  I think I am really going to like this part time gig.  I call it sales but it is not really.  They just signed up a bunch of Nursing homes and wound centers in Minnesota.  They need someone to visit the facilities, educate staff and patients and make sure the case studies are being done correctly.  I have no say on the contract, pricing, whether they like the product or not etc.  As the saying goes, ‘Not my responsibility!”.  WooHoo!!!!

I picked up Donald at the house and we went to the gym.  A little bicycling, weightlifting and Yoga always makes a good day even better.  We came home and grilled pork chops, made a fruit salad, a little rice and some cauliflower for our equinox dinner.  We worked up some mojo for a friend going through a rough treatment for his cancer and for the Mother of friend going through a different type of treatment for another form of cancer.  We burned our Yule wreath and did our combined Rune and Tarot reading for the time period from know until Beltane.  I was also talking to the snow ponies and the water elementals yesterday.  I was really trying to convince them that we needed a little rain and not more snow like the weather report was promising us.  To view my success, please view Donald’s Blog.  The picture of the fresh layer of snow blanketing our gardens says it all.

Check.

Missing you all on a snowy spring day.

Mark

North Carolina, Water and Rain

clock March 8, 2008 06:33 by author Saga

North Carolina has been in a terrible drought.  Not news to any of you who know me because it's been a constant in my conversation.  I've been wailing and worrying, conserving, and day-dreaming all sorts of ways to use the water around me with more economy, with more effect.

The state of NC gradually began to establish and enforce water restrictions late last summer.  At first only (meaningless) personal use for car washing and grass watering were restricted.  However, car wash businesses, golf courses, and the fountains at shopping malls were excluded from the rule.  And the resovoirs kept going down.  Then the Governor began to make commercials about water use and how it was "up to you" to conserve.  The Greensboro city council issued a statement in the local paper that we should all pray for rain anad listed churches that were having prayer meetings.  City Councils began meeting furiously tring to decide what to do.  Amazingly, these meetings were all about how to get more water, where to get more water to maintain the status quo.

In August, everyone started to notice that green-beings were dying, lots and lots of them.  Then, the first little town in southwestern NC ran out of water, then another.  Our local NPR began running stories revealing how people were coping.  There was an interview with the mayor of one of these small towns explaining how the city would have to levy new taxes so water could be purchased and shipped in. He told us the fire station was going to be used as the distribution center.  I saw articles on the web about a shoot-out at the Georgia/Tennessee border over the closing of a dam on a small river.

Locally, we got some rain in September and October so many of the restrictions were softened.  A bit more rain in Decmember and January brought the lifting of some restrictions, but the resovoirs kept going down.  Since mid-February there has been more rain, sometimes for 2 or 3 days in a row. This week it has rained steadily since Wednesday afternoon.  Yesterday, on the news, there were photos of a local resovoir; full of water.  In a live interview, spread with the smiling faces of the Mayor and city coucil members, it was announced that restrictions were lifted entirely. I'm not sure the photos were recent, the resoviors that serve the biggest urban concentrations in the state are still at only 40 to 60 days supply today.  NC is still officially short 33 inches of rain.

What I really need to talk about is how fucking shocked I am with my own reactions to the drought! I'm wrapped tight in paradox.  Part of me is scared to death, part of me just wants my 10-minute showers back, part of me is spouting all sorts of righteous doom and gloom while I conserve every drop!  Part of me is  giving my already overgrown denial mechanism free reign: in my head can't accept this situation; for Gods sake, I have a swimming pool!  Since it began raining this week, I caught myself thinking, oh, it's raining!  I think I'll flush all the toilets, let the water run when I wash my face, AND I'll wash my expensive underwear in the washing machine!  I even enjoyed one luscious moment of wasting water, sneaking like a really bad girl. <laughing>

I do understand my reactions, I have lived much of life in a consumer culture, I've often had more than I needed of everything.  It's amusing today, that I also call myself a witch and so believe that I have a special relationship with all the elements!  I have embraced them in a magical circle, I have adored them in thier abundant presence in my life. But now I feel abandoned by one of those elements.  I feel helpless, I don't like it.

So, being a witch, I called a water goddess council; Yemaya, Chalchiuhtlcue, Anahita, Verbeia and the biggest water-power chic of all, Tsovinar, to beg for help. I built altars for all of them in hope they would send rain so I won't feel abandoned and helpless. (I did not pray: Beloved Goddesses, teach to accept something that has never been part of my reality; lack of something necessary-to-life)

My counsel of Water Power has indeed sent rain.  But,  also because I believe they love me, they have sent night-dreams painted in the colors of sadness, full of memoiries (not all mine) of a time when many babies died because I could not give them water. They sent me night-dreams laced with fearful prophsies of a future in witch water has become a valuable commodity in the western free-market sense of the word. A future when we pay for water, when water is stolen, when violence is committed to get water or keep water. A  future when greenbabies and humanbabies die for lack of water.

Last night's dream was like a fast-forward movie of dry-death, green-earth, wind and rain followed by a long swoop over a desert with an oasis.  Am I being reminded of natural cycles? Am I being reminded that Mother Earth is more powerful than I am, then ALL of us, and that She will, like all good mothers, provide for her children, even when her children make really shitty choices? Is She able to teach me to use my shitty choices as lessons that will serve me forever and ever?

Or am I just dream-surfing in some elaborate scared-little-girl head-trip so I'll feel safe again?

Blog Lesson #1 - How to Log in

clock March 4, 2008 18:29 by author Saga

Hi loves,

I've heard from a few of you that you are having trouble using the Kitchen Table.  So, I'll write up a few "how-to" posts.  Please let me know if I insult your intellegence, give you way too much information or sound like I'm talking to a child.  I write User guides and traning stuff for engineers and so I have a tendency to keep it very simplistic.....<evil smirque>

Next Lesson will be:  How to add comments and create entries!
